Andalucía In & Out of the Tracks: A deeper journey through Southern Spain’s hidden beauty, timeless traditions, and authentic local life.

The land of Andalucía, where time seems to have stopped in the mountains and modern times runs in the capital cities in each province.

Al-Andalus. Beyond Andalus. Arabic name for the northernmost part of the African continent a few centuries ago. That is the Arabic name for what today is Spain.

Today’s region’s name is the remain of the old Empire that dominated most of the Iberian peninsula for almost 800 years.

People’s DNA is mixed among Iberians, Arabics, Jews and Christians. So is life itself.

It is said the Phoenicians arrived to Gadir (Cádiz) 30 centuries ago, Greeks some centuries later, Romans stablished a capital city to one of their Empire provinces in Hispalis, (Sevilla), The most populated city in Continental Europe was Qurtuba (Córdoba) while muslims ruled, and the last bastion of Muslim domination had Garnata (Granada) as their capital city.

Only for that, imagine the heritage and culture.

Discover the spell, mystery and magic from this part of the world, hard to imagine if you don’t see it with your own eyes!

Granada
Day 2: The Alhambra Palaces

Declared World Heritage by Unesco, The Nazarid Palaces of The Alhambra will give you an overview in how advance Muslims were.

The Kingdom of Granada was the last bastion reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. Sure that year sound familiar to you.

For Spanish history that period means a “before and after”.

One of the several lands of the Serrano Ham in Spain, where you will fall for in any curve of the road.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains, with natural water fountains here and there is the largest snow Sky resort in Spain. The altitude and the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, for salt, makes the perfect combo to produce some of the best qualities Serrano hams in Spain. In today’s excursion we will have the chance to learn how this delicacy is produced by some local entrepreneur.

Also will learn some aspects of everyday life and traditions in a small family run business, still using ancient techniques to produce fabrics for curtains, rugs, in their old style workshop. (Subject to disponibility)

Along the line, depending in our pace, we will stop for lunch, included, where we will eat the “Plato Alpujarreño”, a must of the local gastronomy. Watch this clip here, is in Spanish, lasts only one minute, to give you an idea and as teaser on our meal this day. Certainly, no fast food places around.

Hasta mañana!

Granada
Day 4: Granada’s Royal Legacy and Tapas Culture

Today we will dedicate the morning to visit the Royal Chapel where the Catholic Monarchs are buried. Our local guide will teach us about this chapter of Spanish History that changed the course of the future in those days.

Isabel, Queen of Castilla and Fernando, King of Aragón married and unified the future Empire called “Crown of Castilla”.

Honored by the Pope at the time with the title of “Catholic Monarchs” they decided to build their burial monastery in Toledo called “Monastery of the Catholic Monarchs”. They declared the site as Catholic Capital to pay homage to the Pope for the title given.

History changed and after reconquering the last Muslim bastion, The Kingdom of Granada, it was decided to change their burial place to a wing of the future Cathedral of Granada. This temple sits at the very spot where the main Mosque of Granada was.

After visiting the Chapel, we will take a stroll in the souk-like alleys, giving you some free time before joining back with me around 1.30 pm, (to be confirmed), for a tapas lunch experience. (Included).

In a relaxed atmosphere and not worried about the time, you will experience lunch as a Spaniard!

After your desired “siesta”, feel free to walk through the Albaicín quarters or Sacromonte hill. Is your time, you decide!

Evening and dinner on your own.

Granada – Málaga – Sevilla
Day 5: From Granada to Málaga and Sevilla

Today we move to Sevilla visiting Málaga!

Early departure.

Known as the “Capital of the Costa del Sol”, due to her semi tropical climatology, Málaga coastline suffered from speculation by the end of the 60’s and all thru 70’s. Up to a point, the beauty of the coast line nature was spoiled with condo blocks and tourist resorts.

Although Málaga Capital remained almost intact and out of the track from flip flops tourists, today is considered a “high standards” destination due to the amount of cultural activities, after the opening of the museum dedicated to her most famous son, Pablo Picasso. Also a permanent collection of Russian art, The Pompidou collection, Carmen Thyssen collection, etc, etc…

The city center has experienced in the last decade a dramatic change for good making part of it pedestrian friendly, and joining the former enclosed harbor into part of the city to visit and enjoy the unique gastronomy of the area.

On arrival to Málaga, we take a panoramic drive together with our local guide, followed by a guided walk in the heart of the city with an included and private guided visit to the Picasso Museum. We will continue on a walking stroll on the way to our restaurant to enjoy local gastronomy in a family style bases. After lunch, and some time on your own we will gather back at an estimated time to continue our way to Sevilla!

(Full day excursion and transfer 9-10 hours.)

After our arrival to the hotel in Sevilla, we will take a stroll/orientation walk from our centrally located neighborhood. Dinner on your own.

Sevilla
Day 6: Jewish section and Cathedral

After breakfast, departure on foot from our centrally located hotel strolling the Jewish section of the city with our own private guide.

This section is considered the largest in Europe, was remodeled for the 1929 Ibero-American expo and has become the prettiest part of the city.

Patios, small open plazas, orange grows all over…, makes the place ideal to get lost and discover how the locals live the real southern way.

After our walk, we enter the Cathedral. Placed in the grounds of the former Big Mosque, the only resemblance left is the tower and the patio of the ablutions.

Anything else you see was built after Sevilla was declared “Trading Port to the Americas”.

The city is inland, 50 miles away from the mouth of the river Guadalquivir. (Big river in Arabic)

The river is navigable since 2000 years ago when the Romans dominated the area.

Conveniently adapted, it was the ideal and safest place to receive all cargo boats from the other side of the “Ocean Blue”. Being the last sailing track inland, boats were safe from buccaneers and corsairs attacks awaiting near the Straight of Gibraltar.

Our tour finishes inside the Cathedral after learning about Christopher Columbus Tomb, giving you the chance to climb the tower to enjoy the most spectacular view of the city.

Total tour time aprox 4 hrs.

Join me back early evening. You will assist to a flamenco performance into a restored patio belonging to a former palace. (Performance included)

Lunch and dinner on your own.

Cádiz
Day 7: Horses and Cádiz

Full day excursion in our private transport.

Early departure to Cádiz. On the way we will stop at a horse farm to discover the beauty of the Andalusian horses and the history behind their breeding.

Jumping back in our bus we will head to Cádiz. The oldest city in Continental Europe funded by Phoenicians circa 1100 bc. On arrival, our local guide will join us for a panoramic drive and a walking tour of the city.

Followed by lunch (included) with local delicacies specifically from that area. Along the line and depending on disponibility, there will be a Sherry wine tasting and some other “surprise”!

Short time on your own to wonder around. We will gather back to hop onto our private bus to return home in Sevilla. Diner on your own.

(Full day excursion, 9-10 hrs)

Córdoba
Day 8: Islamics, Jews, Christians… all in one

As Usual, after breakfast we jump in our private transport heading northeast to Córdoba.

There is little left to say about this World Heritage site by Unesco. Once the largest city in Western Europe, reaching 1/2 a million citizens circa the end of XI century.

The three cultures lived together. Philosophers, doctors, writers… All kind of experts sharing their knowledge in the peak of her splendor making Córdoba “the place” to be for opportunities in that era.

Our private guide will show us heritage, ancient city walls, alleys, the Jewish section, patios and the majesty of the biggest former Mosque outside Muslim anchored countries, reconverted into a Catholic Cathedral.

Once the tour inside this monument is over, you will have some short time to admire in solitude while taking your photos. We will continue our stroll in the old section on the way to our restaurant for lunch. (Included)

Note: The walking tour and the visit to the Mosque might change in order, depending on entrances disponibility.

Some time on your own after lunch before meeting to return home.

Dinner on your own.

Total excursion time aprox 9 hrs.
Sevilla
Day 9: Royal Sevilla and Farewell Celebration

Today we have an on foot excursion to the Plaza de España, former Spanish Pavillion of the 1929 Ibero-American Expo. Also this spot has been used for many movies hits such as “Star Wars”, “Lawrence of Arabia” among others.

Followed by a guided visit inside The Alcazar, still a working Royal Palace since the city was reconquered by Ferdinand III to the Muslims in 1248.

In today’s tour, our guide will teach us the Palace’s history and different styles reflected in the sections depending when they where added. Our visit ends inside the complex giving you the chance to discover on your own the gardens and spots where many, many shots of “Games of Thrones” were filmed.

Believe it or not, fans from all over the world pilgrim here to see these spots with their own eyes!

Lunch and afternoon on your own.

Join me back early evening. There is not such a visit in Sevilla without a horse Carriage ride, having the opportunity to experience the city from a very different point of view!

Our ride will end by the restaurant for our well deserved farewell dinner and share experiences on this adventure.

Depending on the location of the restaurant, we will walk back together to the hotel seeing the lights of the Cathedral after our dinner.
