Madrid is one the newest Historical Capitals of a country in Europe. Although it was founded as “Capital” of the Nation in the middle of the 16th Century, the nomination as “the Court of the Kingdom” was declared by Phillip II at that time.

Itinerary

Madrid
Day 1: Welcome to the Heart of Spain

After arriving to your centrally located hotel, we will meet at the lobby at 5pm for a brief introduction among ourselves. Then a stroll around the neighborhood to get to know the area where you will be sleeping for the rest of your adventure. Welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant, (included).

Madrid
Day 2: Masterpieces of Madrid

After our breakfast, we jump in our private minivan for a city tour while on the way to visit the world known Prado Museum. A private guide will take us thru the masterpieces of the permanent collection.
Lunch on your own.
By early evening we meet again for a selected and out of the markets wines tasting at a local wine bar.
Dinner on your own.

Toledo
Day 3: Toledo, City of Three Cultures

Today we go to TOLEDO! Once known as the “City of the three Cultures”, where Jews, Christians and Muslims lived together sharing their knowledge and everyday aspects of their lives.
Approximate driving time, 1 hr.

Our private minivan will drive us south to the former Imperial Capital of Castilla, today hosts the regional Government of the so called “Castilla-La Mancha” region.

Private guided tour included visiting “El Greco’s” masterpiece “The burial of the Lord of Orgaz”, followed by a visit of the former and largest Synagogue nowadays holding the Sephardic Museum of the city.
Once done, we will head towards the Cathedral of Toledo, considered a jewel of Gothic style, finished by late 1400´s and unique pieces of art in their permanent collection.

Lunch on your own and some free time to wonder around in the narrow alleys or any other place you want to visit.
Approximately by 5 pm we will head back home.

Segovia
Day 4: Segovia and the Royal Alcázar

Driving north to SEGOVIA.
We will cross the Sierra mountains of Guadarrama continuing north east from Madrid you will notice how the landscaping changes to the climatology affected by the altitude.

After 1&1/2 hrs from our departure we will arrive to the Roman founded city of Segovia. After some centuries she became a Court city while the Catholic Monarchs ruled the former kingdom of Castilla.
Guided tour of the city ending at the impressive Royal Palace.
If the walls of this place, today known as The Alcazar could talk, a life time would not be long enough to hear what they had to say!
Time on your own and meet again for our exclusive and included lunch into this day. A delicacy typical from this land, roasted suckling piglet.

Once we finish our feast, we get back home to Madrid. Total time touring today would around 9-10 hrs.

Madrid
Day 5: Bourbon Madrid and Urban Elegance

Today we remain in Madrid. After our breakfast we will walk in the heart of the city to see the architecture developed when the Borbon Dynasty took over the Spanish empire, and also the last big development the city center had in the early 1900’s.

Lunch, rest of the day and dinner on your own.

Day 6: Spain at Your Own Pace

Today will be at your disposal. You decide when and where to go or do. IF you feel adventurous, I can help you to organize or assist with any excursions you decide to make on your own.
Spain is the country in Europe with the longest mile range of bullet trains and Madrid is the hub of this network. Sevilla could be done on a day trip by train, or Málaga, Granada, Valencia and Barcelona.
I would heartily recommend one of those spots and with pleasure would help you to arrange at the very beginning of this tour. Maybe you want to have a quite day, perfect!

Madrid
Day 7: Royal Madrid and the Habsburg Legacy

Today you will see the actual Royal Palace. Centrally located within walking distance where you’ll enjoy the grandiosity of the Palace that claims to be the largest in Europe with 2.800 rooms in it. Don’t panic, we are only aloud to visit a small portion of the complex where our private guide will let you know about it all.
After a short break we continue on a walking tour in the so called “Madrid of the Habsburgs”, developed in the second half of the 16th century when the Great Grandson of the Catholic Monarchs took over the Crown of Castilla becoming the great Emperor Phillip II. We will end our walking tour close to the hotel.

Salamanca and Ávila
Day 8: Universities, medieval walls, and spiritual heritage in Castilla y León.

Excursion time around 10 hrs.
Salamanca hosts one of the oldest universities in Europe. Opened in 1218 and has gain a prestigious status world wide. The city has a bursting life due to the young students living in the city during the scholar year, yet the city itself also claims to have the prettiest main Square in Europe.
Birth place of some of the most renown literature figures of this country. A curiosity added to this city, it has 2 Cathedrals, the old one from the 12-13th century and the new one, (although annexed) from the 16th-17th century.

Free time for lunch on your own followed to a visit in Ávila, Birth place of Santa Teresa of Jesus. The impressive walled perimeter protecting the city is kind of unique as it is the Cathedral. One of the few “Fortified” temples with the appearance of a Castle and also used as a Royal residency at times. Walking tour and back home.

Madrid
Day 9: Art, Emotion, and Spanish Identity

Museums day. Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía Museums. Both guided with our private local expert.
Today we will visit the largest private collection in the world. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection belonging now to the Spanish National Heritage. From early Flemish to contemporary and abstract art. Short break and we will walk to the “Queen Sofia Arts Center”. This is consider our “modern art” museum. Into the permanent collection stands out Picasso’s masterpiece “Guernika” painting, where he managed to reflect to monstrosity of the bombing that happened in the town of Guernika located in the Basque Country region at the early days of the Spanish Civil War.
Our visit to this museum will focus into this specific art work, leaving you time to wonder among Salvador Dali’s, Joan Miró’s and more Picasso’s masterpieces. Total touring time in both places around 4 hrs.
Lunch on your own.
At previously estimated time we will meet again to enjoy together our farewell dinner, share emotions, impressions and of course toasting with our famous Cava.

Madrid
Day 10: Hasta La Vista, Amigos

After Breakfast, our tour will reach the end of our route for that moment. Who knows if our paths would ever cross again but for sure we could say with hope and out loud…
